Nokia N8 vs iPhone 4 – Ten Things Why Nokia N8 Is Better

First of all, let’s face the inconvenient truth that there is no perfect smartphone in this planet, but still we could consider that there is one smartest out there. Both Nokia N8 and iPhone 4 are candidates, so we will see if which part of my lists does Nokia N8 really standout against iPhone 4.

Price
One of the biggest advantage of Nokia N8 over the iPhone 4 is the price. With the price tag of €370 euros before taxes and subsidies, and converting it to pounds would give us £300. Comparing to the iPhone 4 (unlocked) 16GB with a price of £499 and £599 for 32GB. Therefore making the Nokia N8 much cheaper for a smartphone with cool multimedia features and especially Symbian^3 os.

Design
We admit that the iPhone 4 is slimmer, but there are consequences on this, like on the camera performance e.g. zooming and sensor size. For the color variants of Nokia N8, the mass is already have a wide choice for their taste on the color. There are currently 5 anodized casing for N8 the dark grey, silver white, green, blue and orange For the iPhone 4, there are two the white and the black (no pun intended) and obviously I don’t like that my phone is mistakenly identified by others as an iPhone 3GS or iPod touch.

Video Call
The limitations of Apple facetime for the Wi-Fi connection and iPhone to iPhone is what Nokia already solved and made possible long time ago to their devices. So in N8 you will not be bounded by connections and you will get connected for the video calls in any capable devices.

HDMI + Dolby Surround
Another one few specs that a 2010 smartphone have is the HDMI connection where you can connect to your home theatre. With HD TV you will get a crisp and clear visual treatment as well as with your sound with the Dolby Digital Plus.

Memory
The Nokia N8 has a 16GB internal storage plus giving you a chance to add an external hot swappable microSD card up to 32GB.

USB On-the-Go
If 48GB of storage is not enough for you then consider this USB on-the-go feature where you can read and make slave USB sticks from external hard drive like on this 250GB hdd.

Usability (Reception issue)
If you’re afraid to get a bad reception just because of the phone’s inability to not allow you to have a proper grip, well, isn’t that obvious that this could be one of the biggest mistake that Cupertino company made? Eventhough Nokia N8 isn’t launched yet, we all know that this Finnish giant have more than 1 billion of devices out there and we never have the incidents where people protests just because of the reception issue.

Sensor
To have the biggest camera sensor in the field of camera phones—and even bigger than the other p&s cameras—means that we are having the right innovations. By the size of the N8 and to its one of a kind features, it really shows that this is an advance feature that Nokia N8 will hold against competitors.

Xenon flash
It is still a strong advert of manufacturers that LED flash can provide you enough light for taking pictures. But it is still a fact that xenon flash are the one who leads in the technology of flash for compact cameras as well as to mobile phones. What Nokia did is they reduced the size of the flash to 30% less compare to Nokia N82 & without losing the power.

Editing software & Ovi Maps are free (Symbian^3)
If you’re phone has an HD capable video recording and Symbian^3 on N8 has an on-board video editor and without pulling some extra bucks from your pocket, of course. The same on Ovi Maps, neither we need a connection nor we would pay for it. That is really the magic of Nokia, bringing us connected anywhere and anytime.

Obviously, we are not biased on posting articles nor we are against iPhone 4 to prove if just check Norman’s article about reasons why he shouldn’t wait for Nokia N8.

Reasons why you should NOT wait for the Nokia N8

In a previous post Jade talked about the reasons why one should wait for the Nokia N8 instead of getting one of the current hot toys like the iPhone 4 or the HTC Desire. Of course I personally would also wait for the Nokia N8 but, yes there is a but, there are also reasons why one should definitely not wait:

  • Because Symbian^3 is less an revolution as an evolution – even Nokia said so. Symbian, however, needs exactly this – an revolution – in order to survive on the market .         When it comes to the usability and beauty of the UI, S60 5th Edition and now Symbian^3 are far far behind. Icons still look like in 2005 and the fonts too. Maybe Symbian^4 is the big Messiahs Nokia and Symbian have been waiting for but Symbian^3 cannot compete with iOS 4 and Android in terms in breakthrough for UI, maybe because Symbian^3 is a complete overhaul for Symbian^1 problems.

  • Because other smartphones do also record 720p videos and offer even more around this feature. The recently announced iPhone 4 does also 720p videos but with 30fps instead of the N8′s 25. Sony Ericsson’s Vivaz Pro can also record HD videos, does continuous focus and is already available in the stores. So, this feature is not as groundbreaking as it first sounds

  • Because Nokia World is coming soon and Nokia will, without a doubt, announce a few more smartphones. Of course it remains to be seen what exactly Anssi Vanjoki will show off. One of which can be the E7 that rumours already a while in the internet. Hence, if you want a Nokia, you should wait for the Nokia World and new devices instead of for the Nokia N8.

  • Because the N8 misses many basic features. For example DivX videos are not supported and a multitouch keyboard does not exists.

  • Because there are almost no killer apps and games. While developers are eager to write and contribute high quality apps for Apples’s App store, the Ovi Store mainly consists out of poor applications and games. All mayor titles like Splinter Cell, Spider Man or Iron Man 2 are only announced for the iPhone, not however for Symbian. If you love apps and games, than you should not wait for the N8 and Symbian

  • Because the hardware is not cutting edge. It begins with the nHD screen (360 x 640 pixels) and ends with the 680Mhz processor. Almost all other vendors have already at least one devices with a strong 1Ghz processor and a crystal sharp display. The best example is again the iPhone 4 with its stunning 640 x 960 pixels display which is based on IPS technology.

Concluding I want to say, that some of these points may be a little bit exaggerated, but it shows the tension between Nokia fans and Nokia haters. Also does it highlight the problem Nokia and Symbian are facing these days. Now we want to hear your take! Are you waiting for the Nokia N8 or do you think that the N8 is not worth the money.

Reasons why I should wait for Nokia N8

These recent days there are lots of tempting news and rumours. Some of them are enough to break the patience of the people who are waiting for Nokia N8. But well, I have lists of mine that I keep thinking when the time that nerdgasms enters my mind and try to eliminate my excitement for N8.

I like Nokia N8 so much and that’s:

  • Because N8 is the first Nokia phone to have a 12 MP and also it is the successor for the N86 and N82. With Xenon attached on N8, night shots would be never a problem anymore. We should not also forget on how Carl Zeiss added the superb optics flavour in N82 and that’s why it became legendary camera phone of Nokia. This is getting more exciting in the new N8 because of the reduced Xenon flash and a more promising Carl Zeiss optics. Now I will not worry for cropping the image and printing it to large materials.

  • Because it will record and play HD videos. Aside from crisp photos, we will get also a video recording capabilities in HD!

  • Because N8 has the biggest camera sensor from the field of camera phones and other compact cameras. An astonishing 1/1.8″ Sensor. It has also a 1.75µm pixel size which gives better performance in low light. The bigger and the larger in numbers means better. These are how the 12MP will be useful.

  • Because it is Symbian^3 and you will actually notice that the home screen are similar to the Symbian^1 in N97 and N97 mini. The cool stuff here is we will get 4 homescreen on the new N8. Plus adding more to excitement is the new UI on the phone. I saw the gallery and editing features and I was really amazed on the changes and the speed is noticeably have improved on N8.

  • Because this is cool, the USB OTG! Another thing is the way that N8 can make our usb sticks and storage a slave. I don’t need to transfer my files on the computer before reaching the N8. I can also just add movies and songs directly to N8 from a USB drive.

  • Because HD tvs and projectors are everywhere and I can finally stream or play high quality videos in the big screens.

  • Because I always watch TV. I’m really an avid subscriber of National Geographic and CNN and I am really happy with the new features of N8. I can bring N8 anywhere and watch my favorite channels. Of course, this will be more exciting because of the OLED screen of Nokia N8.

  • Because I can’t pick the right color for me until now. I can’t pick on what exact color to get on Nokia N8 and this is a big problem yet fun! All colors are really attractive and the more I wait the more I rattle in choosing the right color for me. Anodized materials offers comfy feelings in my hands and giving more durability. But here’s a dark grey N8 gallery.

  • Because of my gaming capabilities. My first Nseries devices was N81 and I bought it with the reason I love gaming. Ngage 2.0 was good but it will be better if it will be put in a device with a fast and powerful hardwares and N8 has the future. I really love watching tires rubbing to the concrete of highways.

  • Because it is affordable. I mentioned lots of cool features of N8 and yet the price of N8 is really affordable! Who can imagine that all these features with a price tag of 370 Euro (before taxes and subsidies).

That’s the few things why I like N8 and love to wait for it. I hope some of you have the same sentiment on mine. lols.
